Space station 13's picture is horribly misleading. The game is nothing like that at all, currently. That's a picture of a coming update. SS13 is the greatest single concept ever devised, with the most awful execution and UI of any game in the world.
I once saw a clown cover the floors of the hallways with space lube then disassemble the walls and watched people slide out into space. Then the xenomorphs from Alien showed up and started chest bursting players and were only stopped by the old god, Narsie, who was summoned when the space cultists managed to sacrifice 9 players on a space pentagram. While the admin summoned a meteorite storm which killed all remaining survivors and destroyed the entire ship. I was hiding in the garbage disposal the whole time it went down and ended up suffocating in space. Edit2: I can't imagine the confusion of everyone at SS13 at the moment, you guys might want to read about the Grey Tide event.
The interns rise up and murder the captain angry at their oppression and lack of pay. To clarify for others: Space Station 13 is essentially an open source project currently under development by 3 larger communities. The image in their article is not from the current SS13, it's from a different closed source project which took the same name and aim to reddit best free pc games SS13 from scratch.
It's a fun game but with awful UI and controls like some others have said. I tried to tell them via our twitter spacestation13 - But they either didn't see it, or didn't care enough to correct it. Yea I was confused for a moment, thought they had the update released already. Remakes are infamous in the SS13 community as being unsuccessful as there have been so many, well, unsuccessful ones which drop dead after the content stage.
Everyone should just install Tiggit. Great program that collect all freeware games, like Steam but for free games.
Pretty slow at updating with suggested games but still plenty of games on there already. Here are a few I didn't see in the list that I would strongly recommend:.
Mega Man Unlimited. Desktop Dungeons. Red Eclipse. Beneath a Steel Sky. Katawa Shoujo It's a visual novel, really, but worth checking out nonetheless. Also the Sierra remakes from AGD. Lots of fun, as you can change every little detail to your machine down to the components inside the thing life support, power supply, shields, weapons, radar, back up systems, etc. It has a LAN mode too. Castle of the Winds Ep. Lots of fun and still has that lovable roguelike charm.
Ground Control -- Ground Control is a real-time tactics game that seems a lot like other traditional RTSes, but with one exception--you don't build your base or units. Instead you pre-select a of squ all with different specifications and abilities that are dropped onto the battlefield at different times and you must then complete the mission tasks with the resources given to you. Allegiance -- The game never saw commercial success, so it was released open source and is now known as FreeAllegiance.
Truthfully, at one point in time, the community behind the open source community was quite large, but now it's quite small. The game is still fantastic, so if you want to give it a shot and help rebuild the community again, then go for it.
The Elder Scrolls: Arena -- The game that started it all. Yes, the graphics and interface did not age well, but that rich history that you can find in Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim are in this game as well. Plus you can traverse the entirety of Tamriel in Arena. Diaspora -- Battlestar Galactica freeware game built by fans off of the Freespace 2 engine.
It really is fantastic and it's the only good Battlestar Galactica game out there. It puts you in the cockpit of a Viper pilot, complete with all the intricate controls and functions including the more lore-centric things to the BSG universe, such as pedals for the Vipers. Playing Vanilla Daggerfall now might be a huge pain in the ass. Doesn't the glitch in the main quest still prevent you from progressing if you hit it?
I'd look into mods for this if you want to play it. I was hoping that I would see Katawa Shoujo on there and was thoroughly disappointed when I didn't. Amazing visual novel. Thats a remake that will probably never happen. The absence of Xonotic on TFA baffled me.
